DoIP (ISO 13400) Diagnostic Routing & Encrypted ECU Flashing over Automotive Ethernet

By Automotive Systems Consortium • September 2026

Abstract: Optimizing high-throughput ECU reprogramming in assembly plants and service centers using TLS-encrypted Diagnostics over IP.

1. The Bandwidth Bottleneck of Classical CAN Flashing Flashing modern autonomous driving ECUs containing gigabytes of neural network weights is impossible over 500 kbps CAN (requiring tens of hours). Diagnostics over IP (DoIP per ISO 13400) utilizes 100BASE-T1 / 1000BASE-T1 Automotive Ethernet, achieving transfer speeds exceeding 80 megabytes per second.

2. Transport Layer Security (TLS 1.3) DoIP sessions are encrypted using TLS 1.3, guaranteeing confidentiality and preventing man-in-the-middle tampering during assembly line flashing and Over-The-Air (OTA) updates.
